Time is money. And I know that a project starts long before I sit down at the keyboard.

Case in point: before I talked with punk legend Fat Mike, I conducted in-depth research about the NOFX frontman, peering over past interviews and recent coverage. I had a list of questions, and when I found he’d already answered them, I came up with new ones.

Why did I do this? To give the client (Us Weekly) a unique story, one that didn’t rehash things he’d said countless times before. I also didn’t want to waste Mike’s time with questions others had asked.

By taking the time to do my research, I saved the client a headache and made us all money.

We [NOFX] had some arguments. We never had arguments before. ‘What are we going to do about money now?’ And now, doing this last tour, our crowds are bigger than ever and money is not an issue anymore. And we’re in a great place.
